Riding the EEE PC

So it’s been a month since I got my EEE PC and I’m not looking back (in fact its almost replaced my desktop PC). After a day or two of hacks I’ve stripped the basic interface and replaced it with the “advanced” KDE desktop manager. It now looks and feels like a regular desktop linux PC.
At its core, it runs a variant of CentOS and because its based on Debian, it’s got all that apt-get power you already love (Ubuntu geeks, you know what I mean).
The default config limits its memory to 1GB and its processor speed is underclocked at 630Mhz (probably to prevent overheating). But with the right shell script you can easily increase the speed back to its advertised 900Mhz baseline. I’ve never really come to a point where I’ve craved extra speed (mainly because I use it for IM/Web/movies, which it runs seamlessly).
The keyboard and trackpad will take a day getting used to, but overall I’m loving this little all-in-wonder. About the storage… I’m not that perturbed about the 4Gb solid-state drive. The EEE does what I need it to do and I can always expand using SD cards.
When it comes down to it, all you need is sound and wifi, right?

Awesome little device. Do you recommend getting a 7 inch one now or wait for the 9 inch version in a few months time?
Now I just need to get rid of my Macbook
Hmm… depends on the price when it comes out. The 7-inch is just right, not too small, but big enough to watch your favourite downloaded tv shows
The bigger the better though. I’ll write a review when the 9″ comes out
Cool, glad to hear good things about these. I don’t need a regular laptop and would love to get one of these.
It has everything you need really – OpenOffice, Pidgin for multi-protocol instant messaging, Skype, Firefox and Thunderbird. Plus if you want to add more apps, just use Synaptic of apt-get in the advanced mode to get it
like the idea of a compact Linux unit that can be carried with u n not take up so much space. I expect more great results soon. seriously considering buying one.
