Apple TV Take Two compatible Sapphire build
Ever since I updated the Apple TV to the Take 2 version of the firmware, it has broken my favourite plugin, Sapphire.
If you have access to the Apple development tools and a Mac, you can download the source-code (Sapphire is now open source) and build a Take 2 compatible build.
Many people don’t have this access and such is the superiority of Sapphire over ATV Files or Nito TV for browsing your television and movie collection, that they are prepared to use a version that is not fully baked.
I have been doing just that and so far Sapphire is pretty stable on Take 2. To help those in need like me, I am making available my build of Sapphire for you to download and enjoy while we wait on an official release. You do so at your own risk.

Hi Anice,
I installed your Sapphire build in “/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/” on my Apple TV 2.0.0.
After the reboot I see Sapphire on the main menu, but when I select it the APTv just freeze.
Any clue?
Thanks.
Hi Carlo,
Do you have any volumes mounted via network or USB?
Did you do a upgrade install to Take 2?
My suggestion is to start with just the Apple TV with nothing plugged in and mounted. Also delete whatever you may find in /Users/frontrow/Library/Application Support/Sapphire
This ensures you are starting clean as far as Sapphire is concerned…
I had the exact same problem…so I restored back to 1.0 then did the update to 2.01 then intalled Sapphire
Now It works!
Yep, the problem was the volume mounted via smb (network).
Thanks again.
Great,
Glad to hear it worked out…
It sure is good to have Sapphire back on Take 2
ok my appletv has 2.0 on it then I hacked it and now has nitoTV and a usb hard drive attached to it which holds my movies. everything works great BUT I would like to tag my movies with cover art and a breif description and rating I was told to install Sapphire when I did it did not show up on my appletv menu. So I found your verison will this work and if so HOW do I install it
thanks for your time
Scott
Hey Scott
Yes, it should work and here’s how you install it:
1. Use an SFTP application (like Fugu for Mac) to transfer the Sapphire.frappliance directory onto your AppleTV’s frontrow user’s home directory.
2. Open a Terminal (Mac) or PuTTY (Windows) and SSH into your AppleTV (you can get the IP Address via Settings – Network on your Atv)
3. Username: frontrow / Password: frontrow
4. Type: sudo mount -uw /
5. Enter your password again
6. Type: sudo mv ~/Sapphire.frappliance /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/
7. Type: sudo reboot
8. Once it reboots, you should have Sapphire in the main menu!
Enjoy!
