PLEASE NOTE: PSP Bricking is very rare, but can still happen during a Downgrade/ Upgrade. Downgrading/ Upgrading will VOID the Warranty of your PSP. Do this at your own risk.

If you have a PSP and want more from it, then CFW (Custom Firmware) is the way to go. Custom Firmware allows Homebrew applications to be run. SoF (Sony Original Firmware) v1.50 allowed Homebrew applications to be run and gave the PSP a massive appeal. Newer versions of SoF restrict the use of any and all Homebrew applications.

Installing Custom Firmware:
CFW 3.52 M33-4 to CFW 3.71 M33-2
Requirements:
- CFW 3.52 M33-3 or CFW 3.52 M33-4 on your PSP
- Memory Card
- v3.71 SoF: here
- v3.71 M33 CFW: here
- v3.71 M33-2 CFW Update: here

You will need to download SoF v3.71 and of course v3.71 M33 CFW and v3.71 M33-2 CFW Update from the links above.

Connect your PSP via USB to your computer and extract the contents of “3.71M33.rar” to your “PSP\GAME” folder on your Memory Card:
- PSP\GAME\UPDATE\EBOOT.PBP
- PSP\GAME\UPDATE\umodule.prx

Rename SoF v3.71 to 371.PBP and place it onto your Memory Card under “PSP\GAME\UPDATE\”:
- PSP\GAME\UPDATE\371.PBP

Exit USB Mode and navigate on your PSP to “Game->Memory Stick”. Run “PSP Update ver 3.71″. When prompted press X. It will run through a few checks to make sure everything is in order.
If it gives the error: “The game could not be started.” try placing a UMD Disk into the Drive or try move the folder “UPDATE” to “PSP\GAME150\”
Once completed it will display “PSP Update ver 3.71″ this is a SoF Update. Press X to start the Update. Accept the license agreement and navigate through the Update Changes. Make sure the AC Power is plugged in and that your PSP is charged. Press X to begin the Update.
Once completed press X to restart your PSP.

Welcome to 3.71 M33 CFW!

Enter USB mode again. Delete the “UPDATE” folder that you copied to your “PSP\GAME\” folder.
Extract “3.71M33-2.rar” to your “PSP\GAME” folder:
- PSP\GAME\UPDATE\EBOOT.PBP

Exit USB Mode and navigate on your PSP to “Game->Memory Stick”. Run “3.71 M33-2″.
If it gives the error: “The game could not be started.” try placing a UMD Disk into the Drive or try move the folder “UPDATE” to “PSP\GAME150\”
When prompted press X. It will update and automatically restart your PSP.

Welcome to 3.71 M33-2 CFW!

Backup anything you want to save from your Memory Card and navigate to “Settings->System Settings” and press “Format Memory Stick”. This will restructure your Memory Card.

Hey, just dropping by to let you know that on Oct 23. 2008 v5.00 M33-3 CFW was released?

installing this one will keep you in-line with Sony’s OFW releases which are sitting at v5.01

Thanks Greg, I’ll try and get some time to write about that, and also that should be the last release for the phat PSP’s and Slims, as from 5.03FW-ish and the T 90 Motherboards they use a new loader encryption.
So hopefully the good people out there will be able to come up with something to help us all out :)
