What to expect from Apple’s Update Tuesday
We all know by now that Apple will announce this Tuesday the development and features of iPhone OS 3.0. As to when exactly it will be released to the public, I have a feeling it will make its debut at this year’s WWDC in June. AppleInsider is reporting that MMS is being rumoured to make much anticipated appearance, as well as data-tethering (the ability to use your iPhone as a 3G router with your computer).
Although I hardly used MMS that much when I had my Nokia 91, I think most iPhone users will greatly anticipate it’s availability. Apple seemed to have relied on iPhone users using email (preferably with MobileMe and it’s Push Email service) to send multimedia content to others (which is technically a lot cheaper than your standard MMS message).
As for data-tethering, I cannot wait for it. So far, my jailbroken iPhone used the Cydia-available app, PdaNet to connect my MacBook Air to the ‘tubes while I’m on the run. And while PdaNet is great and a synch to setup, it does have it’s limitations. It uses both the WiFi and 3G modems at the same time which will inevitably drain the already stunted battery, and turns your phone into a miniature heater – the device gets warm.
